My daughter is 11 months old, but she already has a bigger library than anyone I know. I couldn’t tell you her personal reviews of the books (except maybe her preference for eating the pages), but I can definitely tell you my thoughts, and which I’d recommend to anyone trying to increase their child’s library!

I chose Night Night, Groot as my first review because when I was pregnant with my daughter, we referred to her as ‘Baby Groot’ and this was one of the first books we picked up because of that. So that being said, let’s get into it!

Night, Night Groot

Written by: Brendon Deneen
Illustrated by: Cale Atkinson
Pages : 32
Age Range: 5+
Publisher: Marvel Press (2017)
ISBN: 978-1484732823

What you’ll find: Groot, Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel, Avengers, superheros

Night Night, Groot is an adorably illustrated story featuring a lullaby for Groot, with interruptions from Rocket Raccoon who makes him relive the days adventures, including hanging out with more famous Marvel superheros! While a great idea, the switching back-and-forth from the lullaby and Rocket Raccoon talking are more confusing than necessary. As mentioned, the illustrations are beautiful, and the fact that the main Marvel characters made cameos is fantastic! A child recognizing their favorite superheros would love this picture book!

The great news is, this doesn’t feel like one of the normal superhero kids books, where they slap together a couple sentences and graphics and sell it for the sake of money. There is definitely an adventure to this, though it ultimately misses a moral unfortunately. Still, for younger children the pictures and favorite characters are enough. And for those not a fan of the duo stories happening simultaneously, I recommend reading Rocket Raccoon’s adventure recap first, and then the lullaby on a second pass through!

Would I recommend: Yes and no. If you/your child is a fan of Marvel, Groot, Guardians of the Galaxy, or superheros in general – then yes! It’s adorable, beautiful illustrations, and a fun addition to your superhero collection! If you’re not a fan of the aforementioned, it’s still a cute book but I would recommend checking it out at the library first. As I mentioned, the book ultimately lacks a moral which I personally prefer for my daughters books, so this one will go in the superhero section!

What do you think? Is this book in your collection, or do you think you’ll add it? Let me know your thoughts below!

  1. Sounds like a really fun book! My son is a grown up now, but he definitely would have loved this as a child. Books are so important to our childhood – and our adulthood as well! Thank you for sharing, and for being a part of the Hearth and Soul Link Party. Have a wonderful week ahead!

    • Thanks so much for hosting, and stopping by! It is darling! My daughter loves this book already (well, mostly loves to eat it -but she stares at the pages too sometimes)! 🙂
